Cat Penance
"ஒரு பெரிய யானைக்குப் பக்கத்தில் ஒரு பூனை தவம் செய்கிறது.அதன் அருகில் எலிகள் விளையாடுவதைப் பார்க்கலாம். இந்த சிற்ப அற்புதத்தை நிர்மாணித்த விசுவகர்மாக்கள் சிற்பக் கலையின் உயிர் நிலையைக் கண்டவர்களாயிருந்ததுடன், நகைச்சுவை உடையவர்களாயும் இருந்திருக்க வேண்டும். கங்கா நதி தீரத்தில் தவம் செய்யும் மகான்களுக்கும் மத்தியில் ருத்ராட்சப் பூனைகளும் உண்டென்பதை அவர்கள் சித்தரித்து காட்டி இருக்கிறார்கள்."

Missing these trips !
The cat penance is a fine illustration of how our hard working artists were witty enuf. Wouldn't t be worth to pose a question in PS group and find out what other places exhibit the witty side of our artists ?
Many articles about this piece of sculpture suggests that it is a representation of a panchatantra story.But I do not understand the logic of placing that as a part of Arjuna's penance. I'm sure someone would have deduced it already.
So I'm not sure if this is entirely a satirical stand as suggested by kalki.
Yes we can very well post it in PS too, but wondering if we should confirm the intention behind this sculpture first.

welcome back! hmm...was it just witty or did the sculptor drive a message? like 'if the great warriors go on a penance, then all the miscreants(peruchaali) would dance around..
Yadhvi - Could be.(But great warriors as cats doesn't fit though)
